What actually happens during an initial assessment?

Women’s health therapist in Manchester, welcoming clients for an initial assessment
Dawn is standing in her clinic, explaining what happens during an initial assessment.

A lot of women feel nervous before booking their first appointment. Not because they don’t want help. But because they don’t really know what to expect.

Often, they’re wondering things like:

“What if I don’t explain it properly?”

“What if I get emotional?”

“What if I don’t really know what’s wrong?”

And sometimes, they’ve put things off for months simply because the whole idea feels a bit overwhelming.

One of the biggest things I want women to know is that you do not need to arrive with everything figured out.

You don’t need:

  • perfect words

  • a full explanation

  • or a clear understanding of what’s causing things

That’s part of what we work through together.

The Initial Assessment is designed to look at the bigger picture.

We talk about:

  • What’s been going on

  • What your body feels like day to day

  • What’s changed over time

  • and what feels most difficult or frustrating right now

From there, we look at how your body is moving, compensating and responding.

Everything is explained clearly as we go. Nothing is rushed.

And you’re able to ask questions throughout.

Depending on what your body needs, treatment may include:

  • hands-on treatment

  • abdominal therapy

  • scar work

  • movement guidance

  • breathing support

  • or pelvic floor awareness work

But the appointment is never about throwing lots of things at you all at once.

It’s about understanding what your body actually needs first.

One of the things women often say afterwards is:

“I finally feel like someone actually listened.”

Because for many women, it’s not just about the symptoms themselves.

It’s about finally having:

  • clarity

  • direction

  • and support that actually makes sense

The Initial Assessment is also not about trying to “fix” everything in one session.

It’s about understanding:

  • What may be contributing underneath

  • What your body is currently struggling with

  • And what the next best step looks like from there

That’s what creates proper progress.

Not panic.

Not pressure.

And not trying to force the body before it’s ready.

If you’ve been putting things off because you feel unsure, nervous or overwhelmed…that’s completely understandable.

But you do not need to have everything worked out before asking for help.

You’re allowed to come exactly as you are.

Sometimes the hardest part is simply taking that first step. And often, once women finally do, they realise they’ve been carrying far more on their own than they needed to.

If you feel ready to take that first step, you’re very welcome to book an Initial Assessment.

Love always,

Dawn xx
