Why “Bounce Back” Recovery Often Makes Women Worse

Therapist Dawn from Sunshine Holistic Therapy sits in her treatment room, smiling warmly.

For years now, women have been told some version of the same thing after having a baby.

“Once you’ve recovered, it’s time to bounce back.”

Bounce back to exercise.

Bounce back to your old body.

Bounce back to normal life.

And on the surface, it sounds positive. Encouraging, even.

But in reality, that idea causes more problems than it solves.

Because the truth is, growing and birthing a baby is one of the most physically demanding things the human body can do.

Muscles stretch.

Organs shift.

Fascia adapts.

Hormones change how tissues behave.

And if there has been a C-section or abdominal surgery, the body has also gone through major surgical healing.

Yet somehow the message women often receive afterwards is that recovery should be quick, neat and mostly invisible.

Just exercise.

Just strengthen your core.

Just get back to normal.

The problem is that strength is rarely the first thing the body actually needs.

Very often, the body is still holding restrictions from pregnancy, birth or surgery.

Scar tissue can limit how tissues move.

Fascia can remain tight or protective.

The abdominal wall may still be adapting after months of change.

If those deeper restrictions are ignored and the focus goes straight to strengthening exercises, the body simply compensates.

Women might notice things like:

• their tummy doming when they exercise or cough

• tightness or pulling across a C-section scar

• hips or lower back that ache constantly

• a core that just doesn’t seem to switch on properly

And when that happens, many women assume they’re doing something wrong.

However, very often the issue isn’t effort.

It’s the order of recovery.

In my therapy clinic, I work with a very simple principle:

Release. Restore. Rebuild.™

First releasing restriction in the tissues.

Then restoring proper movement so the body can function again.

And only then rebuilding strength safely.

When the body is supported in that order, changes tend to occur more naturally.

Tension eases.

Movement improves.

Strength can return without the body fighting against itself.

It’s not about pushing harder.

It’s about working with the body rather than against it.

The idea that women should simply “bounce back” after pregnancy ignores just how incredible, and demanding, that experience really is.

Real recovery isn’t about rushing.

It’s about understanding what the body has been through and giving it the support it deserves.

And when women are supported properly, their bodies are often far more capable of recovery than they were ever led to believe.

Love always,

Dawn xx
