What proper recovery actually looks like after pregnancy or surgery

Something I hear quite often when women first come to see me is:
“I thought recovery would be easier than this.”
Or sometimes…
“I thought I’d be much better by now.”
They’ve rested.
They’ve tried the exercises.
They’ve been told to strengthen, get moving, or just give it time. And yet their body still doesn’t feel quite right.
The tummy still feels tight or unsupported.
The scar still feels numb, pulled or strange.
Getting out of bed or off the sofa still feels awkward.
Or they’re left wondering why things still feel uncomfortable months or even years later.
And that’s often because proper recovery is about much more than just time passing.
Why recovery doesn’t always happen just because time has passed
One of the biggest misunderstandings around postnatal and post-surgical recovery is the idea that once time has passed, the body should simply “be better”.
And while tissues do heal, that doesn’t always mean they’ve recovered well.
A scar can close beautifully on the outside….but still feel tight, numb, stuck or restrictive underneath.
The abdominal wall can look “healed”…but still not be moving, supporting or functioning as comfortably as it could.
The body can be considered medically fine…while still feeling very different in day-to-day life.
This is the bit so many women are never told because there’s a big difference between something having healed and something having recovered properly.
What “not quite right” can actually feel like
A lot of women don’t necessarily walk around thinking, “I haven’t recovered properly.”
They just know their body still feels… off. That can show up as things like:
the tummy still feeling tight, heavy or unsupported
an abdominal overhang that still feels stuck or uncomfortable
a scar that feels numb, pulled, hard or strange
needing to roll, jerk or brace to get off the sofa or out of bed
back, hips or shoulders doing more work than they should
movement feeling awkward, stiff or not as natural as it used to be
And often, women are told this is just normal. But common and normal are not always the same thing. Very often, these are signs that the body is still holding tension, restriction or compensation patterns that haven’t been addressed yet.
What proper recovery often needs instead
Proper recovery often isn’t about doing more. It is about giving the body what it actually needs.
That can mean:
releasing restriction in the tissues
helping scars and fascia move better
reducing pulling, pressure or tightness
restoring movement and space in the body
reconnecting with the breath, core and pelvic floor
and only then rebuilding strength from a better place
This is exactly why the work in my therapy clinic follows a simple principle:
Release. Restore. Rebuild.™
Because if the body is still restricted, tight or compensating, trying to strengthen on top of that can sometimes just create more pressure and frustration.
Whereas when the body is supported properly first, it often starts responding in a completely different way.
What women often notice first when things start changing
One of the most interesting things about proper recovery is that the first changes are not always the dramatic ones people expect. Often, it’s the everyday things.
Things like:
an abdominal overhang starting to look smoother and flatter
scars feeling softer, smoother and less stuck
numbness improving significantly
being able to get off the sofa or out of bed without that awkward jerk and roll
the tummy feeling less tight, less heavy, or more supported
movement starting to feel easier and more natural again
And these little shifts matter. Because they’re often the first signs that the body is no longer just coping…It’s actually starting to recover.
Final thoughts
If recovery has felt harder, slower or more uncomfortable than you expected, it doesn’t mean you’ve done anything wrong. And it doesn’t mean your body is failing.
Very often, it simply means your body hasn’t had the right support yet. Because proper recovery is rarely just about waiting.
It’s about giving the body what it needs to release, restore and rebuild in the right order.
Love always,
Dawn xx
