Why symptoms keep coming back (even when you’re doing everything right).

Something I hear quite often when women first come to see me is:
“I’m doing everything right… so why isn’t this getting better?”
They’ve been doing the exercises.
They’ve followed the advice.
They’ve tried to be consistent.
And yet…
The tummy still doesn’t feel right.
The back or hips keep flaring up.
The scar still feels tight, numb or uncomfortable.
It can feel confusing. Frustrating.
Sometimes it's as if your body is working against you.
But most of the time, that isn’t what’s happening at all.
What’s actually happening in the body
The body is incredibly good at adapting.
If something isn’t moving well, something else will quietly step in and take over.
If an area feels restricted, the body will find another way to get the job done.
That might mean:
• muscles working harder than they should
• other areas taking on extra load
• tension building in places that weren’t designed for it
And at first, this can work quite well.
But over time, those compensations start to build.
And that’s often when symptoms begin to show up.
Why do symptoms keep coming back?
When the body is still holding restriction, whether that’s from scar tissue, fascia, or tight overworked muscles, adding strengthening on top can sometimes make things feel worse rather than better.
Not because strengthening is wrong.
But because the foundation hasn’t been addressed yet.
So instead of resolving the issue, the body continues to:
• work around the restriction• reinforce the same patterns• bring the symptoms back again.
This is often why something can feel like it improves slightly…only to return days or weeks later.
What this can look like in real life
This is where many women start to feel stuck.
You might notice things like:
• a tummy gap that doesn’t seem to improve
• doming when exercising or even coughing
• lower back or hip pain that keeps returning
• a scar that still feels tight, numb or pulls
None of these means your body is failing.
They usually mean your body is still adapting around something that hasn’t been fully resolved yet.
What actually helps
This is why the work in my therapy clinic always follows a very specific order:
Release. Restore. Rebuild.™
First releasing restriction in the tissues.
Then restoring movement.
Then rebuilding strength, safely and at the right time.
When the body has space to move properly again, strengthening becomes far more effective.
Because you’re no longer building strength on top of tension or compensation.
You’re building it on a body that can actually function the way it’s meant to.
So if things haven’t improved or keep coming back, it doesn’t mean you’ve done anything wrong.
It usually just means your body hasn’t had what it needs yet.
And often, the difference isn’t about doing more.
It’s about doing things in the right order.
Love always,
Dawn xx
